Burnout is not an illness, it is a psychological problem that diminishes motivation. It is not caused by stress or imbalance. It is caused by "uncontrollability" - feelings of powerlessness, being trapped and unable to do anything about it.

Burnout is stressful and the stress, which can impact health, must be reduced. But reducing stress is treat one of the symptoms and does little about the underlying cause. You can think of stress being the "fever" of burnout. Gotta get that fever down . . . but your are still struggling with the sickness.

Burnout is overcome (or prevented) by developing personal power - feelings of I-Can-Do. The suggestions in this article do just that - help a person to get a feeling of control over their work.

My site is packed with useful information on burnout and other career issues. http://www.docpotter.com/art_bo-summary.html
